If you are a US citizen or US permanent resident living in Australia, you must file both an Australian Tax Return with the ATO, as well as a US tax return with the IRS reporting on all your worldwide income each year.
As a US citizen it is critical that you are up to date with your legal obligations as state and federal tax or revenue departments may start a process to revoke your legal privileges. For example, at the federal level, if the IRS estimates that you owe over $50,000 in unpaid tax, they may contact the State Department to take away your passport. While in the state of New York, if you have $10,000 unpaid tax, the New York Department of Taxation and Finance may recommend the suspension of one’s drivers’ licence.
